Let's Get the Conversation Started

My friend Andrew Smith has welcomed us to his couch for a discussion about boys and YA literature. It's a valuable video, so please devote fifteen minutes of your day to get a prolific perspective on the big picture. No disclaimer needed, just go make of it what you will.

    I was a total tom-boy growing up, still am really, so I tend to relate more to most "boy books" than I do to "girl books". It's to bad they tend to be few and far between.

    That's why we need more great male writers like you, Jon.

    I'll try to get there tonight. The big thing is that boys could use some decent freakin books. Boys read, but the book's gotta be funny and sexy and teach them something they WANT to know about...like how their dates TOTALLY appreciate fresh breath and how girls do not like to be rushed when they're getting ready. And a lot of boys' books don't have enough plot...honestly I don't think boys care as much about plot as females, however, if a book can include all the stuff they do like AND an awesome plot, much the better.

    Coolio. I don't have a lot of opinion on YA books. I love adult books and children's books, but YA seems to leave me pretty underwhelmed.

    I'll try and watch it soon. My connection is slow right now, but I did read all the comments people left and am even more intrigued. (Yeah, it's kind of like reading the sequel before the book, but hey, gotta do what you gotta do)

    What I found by working with boy readers for years and years is that different boys like different kinds of books. You can draw some generalizations but not everyone will fit into them. One of my reluctant boy readers liked romance novels.
