Introducing my second contest ever!!
So here's the deal, books and I have not been getting along lately. I am reading some AMAZING books, but life sucks right now and these books are almost too deep for me, I guess. I looked back on my favorite books of the year and noticed the ones that took me a day or two to read were HILARIOUS. Forget LOL, I was ROFLing all over the place during Swim the Fly, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Srsly, these books are near the top of my all-time faves list and that's largely due their bust a nut nature.
The contest (the easiest one ever):
Within the comments of THIS post, leave ONE suggestion for a hilarious book. I will read these suggestions in August and chose one winner of a special gift. Yup, that's all you have to do: reco a hilarious read. Now, if someone has already listed your pick in the comments, feel free to also suggest that book and if it's the winner, I'll draw a name as the tie breaker.
Again, GiggleFest2010 = comment with recommendation of hilariousness.
You have until Tuesday, July 20 to get your suggestions in. In the event that I am unable to read them all, I am starting with the first recommendation, so I suppose that's first-come-first-served. If I have already read the book you suggest, I will refer to my Goodreads list when ranking, but if you are intent on suggesting something new, you may view the list ahead of time. Also, if someone has already listed your pick in the comments, feel free to also suggest that book and if it's the winner, I'll draw a name as the tie breaker.
Anyone confused, concerned, or super-duper-excited?!
Anyone confused, concerned, or super-duper-excited?!
I hear you on the too heavy.
ReplyDeleteMr. Cate brought home "The Road" to watch the other night. When it was over, at 12:30 am, I was like "Thanks, now I have to watch an hour of comedy central stand up to erase that from my nightmares"
My funny suggestion would be anything by David Sedaris, or A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.
Both a change of pace if you've been burning through the YA lately.
"Are you Dave Gorman" by Dave Gorman
ReplyDeleteand
"Googlewhack Adventure" by Dave Gorman
Both are sooo funny
oh crap I was supposed to pick one...ugh that's hard. Fine, I pick "Are you Dave Gorman" - but read Googlewhack adventure too
ReplyDeleteOh boo, I'm out. The only humorous books I read are chick lit. But Dave Gorman is hilarious. Even my hubs has read his books (which is saying a LOT right there). So, I'm not going to steal Dena's thunder and recommend him, but I will say, pick Dena, choose Dena, love Dena.
ReplyDeleteDo picture books count? Because The Hiccupotamus by Aaron Zenz is so funny. And you need to read all of it, including the fine print and copyright information. I love it.
ReplyDeleteDoes that make me immature? ;)
aw, Marisa, YOU MY BOO!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if you've ever read "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett (who makes scratching his ankle hilarious) and Neil Gaiman, but it's one of the funniest books I've ever read. :]
ReplyDeleteYou need to read SPANKING SHAKESPHERE by Jake Wizner. I seriously think it is the funniest book ever written.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all time favorites (although convoluted, but that's part of the fun) is To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. It's a time traveling adventure that ties together Three Men in a Boat, Oxford, Victorian England, the Bliz in WWII, a supposed-to-be-drowned cat, a dog, a seance, and a romance.
ReplyDeleteHmmm....am thinking on this one. Stay tuned.
ReplyDeleteJanet Evanovich's series, starting with One For the Money, is flippin' hilarious! Whenever I need a good laugh, I read one of those. Oh, so funny! :-)
ReplyDeleteNIGHTLIGHT HAD ME SNARFING UP MY DINNER.
ReplyDeleteoh goodness.
hehee
Tahereh--I just saw nightlight in the bookstore, and just the concept that it existed got me giggling.
ReplyDeleteJ--THERE IS NO READING DURING THE TOUR DE WRITING.
just kidding. Um, I have to review my book lists to figure out what to recommend. Be back later.
Hi, Jon! I have another award for you at my blog today. :-)
ReplyDeleteSTOP ME IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE, by David Yoo. For real, that's the title. It's YA, about a kind of pathetic guy who does everything wrong, EVERYTHING, even to classmates with cancer... but the reader can't stop laughing.
ReplyDeleteJon, our Holden Caulfield, Tom Sawyer differences aside, I think you'd love this.
I'm going with WIMPY KID series.
ReplyDeleteHi Jon. I was just skimming the bios on Heather's blog, and found out that we're practically neighbors. I live near Muskegon -- not super close to Ludington, but kinda.
ReplyDeleteAs for funny books, did Paul let you read Up North? If not, ask him for it. It's the funniest thing I've read in like three years, published or no.
Okay, I'm too late seeing this, but I'll suggest a book anyway. Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You by Peter Cameron. It's not ha ha ha funny, but funny in a quiet way. James is such a great character. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteI am too late too. I have had this book here for the longest time and it has been hard to get into it but finally it is making me laugh. Adromeda Klein by Frank Portman. He wrote King Dork too that apparently folks loved and I never read. I'm not done with AD either. But so far, dense = hard to get into = just like me and now finally super funny and smart = maybe someday I will be too. So, maybe too much too late, but that is how I roll!
