Where Are the Gay Parents in Children's Literature? Blog series begins Monday

Kristine Asselin and I are hosting a blog series that explores the presence or lack there of gay parents in children's literature. The series begins Monday, August 15. Please come back and join in the conversation!

If you're interested in joining and have a book or two (or more) that you'd like to feature, you may email me at jonarntson AT gmail DOT com or send a Twitter message to @JonathonArntson.

Please feel free to download and save this banner if you'd like to spread the word.

  1. Fascinating topic. I would say that most parents are missing or dead, period. Of the ones that manage to survive, I've seen no gay parents at all. But, I'm not that well read in children's literature as I read and write adult fiction.

  2. Michael - Do you read outside your genre? I think children's lit is a great catalyst for learning some fun writing tricks.

  7. They're Rachel's two dads on Glee. Just kidding. This is a great idea for a topic, Jon!

  9. You've got me stumped here. I can think of some plays, but books...hmmm...will think on this.

Side note: I had to go BAAACK to the DMV today...we had to leave yesterday after waiting two hours, because we had to be somewhere else. Ugh. It was horrible. But daughter finally got her permit today. Yay!

  10. Anita - We'll see what we can uncover for you come Monday. The DMV sounds like an awful place! Here it's always quiet and full of local travel info.

  11. Jon, this is actually something I addressed in Imperfect Symmetry. I'm interested to see your angle on this topic.

Hoorah for you for championing a discussion of this magnitude!

  12. Adam - By addressed, do you mean your characters actually discuss it? I am very interested to know! And thanks for the hoorah, we are hoping to get a conversation going that reaches out to all types of people.

  13. What a great topic to explore! I don't think I've read a single book that features gay parents in YA. Definitely books with gay characters now, but never parents. Something to think about for sure.

  14. What a great idea. It's an important topic and I'm guessing sadly that we'll be discussing the lack of gay parents.
